Water is quickly becoming an “endangered species” on our blue planet. Urban growth increases storm water runoff, which in turn harms natural waterways. All life requires water for survival. Becoming aware of the current state of our environmental condition is the first step in identifying viable solutions to ensure clean and healthy water for future generations.
Local water sources such as lakes, reservoirs and groundwater continue to decline despite regular rain events. Some examples of why this is happening are:
Demand is becoming greater than supply and the rains that do fall on our ground are lost.
Rainwater is actually flowing away from the area it falls on due to development.
Highly developed areas can have 50% or more surface area covered by impervious surfaces
forcing water away from the area where it is needed.
As rainwater is carried away it does not have the opportunity to soak into the soil or groundwater
reserves so our aquifers continue to lose water and new water is not coming.

As you start your planning, start by watching your water needs. Conserve first and then start building small with an eye on the future. SOME EXAMPLES OF WAYS TO RAINWATER HARVEST ARE:
1. Rain Barrels- The simplest way of capturing rainwater is to trap it in a barrel. A rainwater barrel can be placed at the bottom of your existing gutter and drainage systems. Storing rain water allows you to keep gardens growing during watering restrictions and reduces the burden for municipal water. Rainwater is also much better for your plants than municipal chemically treated water.
2. Create a Rainwater Garden- By capturing rainwater from your downspout there are many different options available such as creating gardens that use the water for its irrigation or more highly advanced systems that hold the water in chambers underground to be used at your discretion for landscape irrigation purposes.
3. Add a water feature to your property using a Pondless Waterfall with a holding tank underground. Use the water for the water feature and you could also access the water for irrigation purposes.
